About

My name is Sam Black

BACP Registered

MA Intergrative Counselling & Psychotherapy

(She/Her)

I believe the past is always present. Understanding links between your past and present can enable you to move forward with understanding and self-compassion. Embrace the future by resolving patterns that no longer serve you.

I'm an integrative therapist, which means I have been trained in different theories so I can adapt to your needs.  I also work relationally, believing the therapeutic relationship is healing in itself and focus on creating a genuine and healing connection. I offer a warm, secure, and confidential space to recover, heal and grow.

Although I work with a wide of issues in relation to trauma I have volunteered and worked in sexual abuse and domestic abuse agencies and have undertaken training to work safely with trauma. I believe to recover, heal and grow it's not necessary to go back and discuss the trauma itself, unless you feel it would be helpful. Trauma takes away our power so it's important that you are in control of what we explore together, and we would work at your own pace.

You are an individual. So, although I bring my knowledge and experience, I will listen to you without judgement and assumptions about your unique experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a session last?

Sessions last 60 minutes.

How much will it cost?

Sessions cost £60.

How will sessions take place?

Sessions are via phone or Zoom. I am not currently offering face to face sessions.

How frequently would the sessions be?

Typically, we would meet weekly at regular times. You will have a slot that is only yours, same day, same time, every week.  As therapy progresses, we may decide together to vary that.

How long will I need to come for therapy?

The number of sessions is up to you. I usually recommend a minimum of 6 sessions to allow the counselling process to develop.

How will I know you are the right therapist for me?

Before starting therapy, we would have a brief introductory chat.  It's important you feel comfortable, and we feel able to work together.

Is it confidential?

Anything you say within the sessions remains confidential with the following exceptions:
To ensure I maintain good standards of ethical practice I discuss my work in confidence with my supervisor.  No identifying information is used.
If I feel either you or someone else is at risk of serious harm, then I may have to break confidentiality.  I will endeavour to discuss this with you first wherever possible.

Testimonials

  • I have been able to examine my trauma with self compassion with a greater understanding of my past and current behaviours due to living in flight and fight for so long and not being aware of myself or others. I feel I dissociate less as I am coming back into my own body and mind more. I recommend the therapist Sam Black. I found Sam's therapy to be insightful, caring, professional, calm, reassuring.

  • Sam has been an incredible help. Not only did she help get me out of the really dark place I was in but, she also helped me begin my journey to self-discovery and regaining the control in my life. She has given me new ways of thinking and new ways of coping. New insights to situation I had never thought of. I feel more empowered than ever on my new journey.

  • I've had councillor's before but with Sam I never felt judged I opened up and it's been really painful and jumbled, she's been so patient and helped me learn 2 breathe and cry. I've said no to people that I wouldn't have before, learnt I can only do so much, still have down days about that but talking helps, she's totally 1 in a million and there should be a Sam in everyone's lives.

  • Sam is very personable and knowledgeable. She is able to listen and offer solutions. I felt comfortable with her. She also has great cultural sensitivity. Highly recommend.

  • Like any therapist it takes time to lean in, to trust and really open up. But Sam out of all the therapists I have had makes me feel at ease and like she's really listening. There is a deep, safe, warmth there even when you feel scared. She is non-judgemental, friendly and fun. She remembers what I tell her about how I think/feel and explains/reflects things back to me in a manner that suits me. I highly recommend her.

Cherry Blossom

We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another; unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, childish in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, forward, or fix us in the present. We are made up of layers, cells, constellations.
